Scented vs unscented cat litter: what your cat's nose is telling you

NL

Here is the thing about fragrance in a litter box: it was put there for you. Nobody in a product meeting has ever asked whether a cat would like lavender. Scent is on the bag because it sells the bag, because it reassures the person carrying it to the register that the corner of the room is going to be fine. The animal actually standing in the material had no vote.

I am not going to tell you that scented litter is evil — we make scented lines and a lot of cats use them happily. But I do think the decision gets made backwards, by the species with the weaker nose, and it is worth understanding what you are actually choosing between.

The short answer

Fragrance masks odor. It adds a smell rather than removing one, and your cat experiences it at close range for the entire time it is in the box, with a nose considerably more sensitive than yours. Plenty of cats do not care. But if your cat is fussy, has stopped covering, hovers on the rim, or has any airway sensitivity, unscented is the first variable to change — and real odor control comes from strong clumping, neutralizers and frequent scooping, not perfume.

Part 01

You are shopping for a nose that is not yours

Cats live in a world organized substantially by smell. Their olfactory sense is markedly sharper than ours, and they also have a second chemical-sensing structure in the roof of the mouth — the reason you sometimes catch a cat with its mouth slightly open, lips pulled back, looking briefly ridiculous. They are not smelling. They are analyzing.

Scent is also how cats organize their territory. They have glands on the cheeks, chin and tail base, and rubbing on furniture, doorways and your legs deposits their own signature on the environment. A home that smells right to a cat is a home covered in a scent map it wrote. Introducing a strong manufactured fragrance into the one spot where a cat is most exposed and most vulnerable is, at minimum, an interruption to that system.

The practical test is simple. If you can smell the litter clearly from a standing height across the room, work out what that concentration looks like from two inches above the surface, from an animal with better equipment than yours. That is the exposure your cat has, several times a day, every day.

Part 02

Masking versus actually removing odor

Litter box smell is mostly ammonia, produced as urea in urine breaks down. There are only a few ways to deal with it, and they are not equally honest.

Five approaches to litter box odor
How it works Effect on actual odor What your cat experiences
Added fragrance Perfume compounds released continuously from the granule None — the ammonia is still there, now with a second smell over it A strong, constant, unfamiliar scent at close range for the whole visit
Deodorizing beads or powders Fragrance carriers sprinkled into the litter None — masking in its purest form The same thing, concentrated into particles the cat digs directly through
Baking soda Neutralizes acidic odor compounds chemically Genuine reduction Essentially nothing — no scent added
Porous mineral (e.g. volcanic stone) Adsorbs odor molecules into the pore structure Genuine reduction Essentially nothing
Strong clumping plus scooping Removes the source before it breaks down The largest single effect available A cleaner box, which is what cats actually want

Odor-control mechanisms described here are general chemistry, not brand-specific performance claims. Our unscented cassava blend uses baking soda and porous blue volcanic stone; formulations differ across our lines and across the category. Summer makes all of this harder, which we covered in why litter smells worse in warm weather.

Part 03

The enclosed-box multiplier

Fragrance rarely operates alone. It usually shows up alongside a covered box, because both are bought by someone trying to solve the same problem — the smell reaching the human — rather than the problem the cat has.

A hood does not remove odor. It contains it. The volume of air inside an enclosed box is small, poorly ventilated, and precisely where your cat puts its head. From the outside the room smells better, which is exactly why people like them, and that improvement is entirely about the direction the odor is travelling. Not smelling it is not evidence that it is gone. Add a fragranced litter into that same small volume and you have concentrated two things your cat did not ask for into the space it has to breathe while it works.

If your cat dashes in and out without covering, or has started perching on the rim to keep its face above the litter line, the enclosure and the scent are both worth suspecting. There is a longer conversation to have about hoods, sizes and placement, and it is coming later this week.

Part 04

How to tell whether your cat is objecting

Cats do not refuse a litter with a memo. They edit their behavior, gradually, and the early signals are easy to read past.

Signals worth taking seriously

  • Stops covering, or covers half-heartedly and leaves
  • Stands on the rim, or keeps two paws on the edge
  • In and out fast, with no digging beforehand
  • Scratches the wall, the floor or the outside of the box instead of the litter
  • Shakes paws vigorously on the way out
  • Eliminates right next to the box rather than in it

What to do about it

  • Call your vet first if this is new — sudden avoidance can be a urinary problem, and that is urgent in male cats
  • Once medical causes are ruled out, change one variable at a time
  • Try unscented before you try a different material entirely
  • Run the old and new litter in two boxes side by side and let your cat vote
  • Remove any deodorizing beads, powders or nearby air fresheners
  • Scoop more often before concluding the litter is the problem

A side-by-side test is the most underrated tool in this whole category. Put the current litter in one box and the candidate in another, a reasonable distance apart, and watch for a few days. Cats are unambiguous when you actually give them the choice. If yours has already stopped using the box entirely, work through the behavior-first checklist — and if you have more than one cat, check that you have enough boxes in enough places before you blame the bag.

Part 05

When scented is genuinely fine

I want to be even-handed here, partly because it is true and partly because we sell both.

A lightly scented plant litter is a reasonable purchase if your cat has used one for years without complaint, if the box is in a living space where the human tolerance threshold is doing real work in keeping the box in a good location, and if nobody in the household — feline or otherwise — has respiratory sensitivity. A cat that is settled and happy is not a problem to solve. Do not switch a working setup because of an article.

Unscented becomes the clear choice when any of these are true: your cat is new to the home and still deciding what it thinks of everything, your cat has a history of box avoidance, your cat has been diagnosed with an airway condition — in which case see our piece on litter and feline asthma — or someone in the house finds scented products unpleasant. Unscented is the low-risk default. Scented is a preference you can afford when nothing is going wrong.

Straight talk

Our cassava line is unscented, with baking soda and porous volcanic stone doing the odor work instead of perfume, and it is the bag I hand to anyone whose cat is being difficult or whose household is scent-sensitive. We also make scented tofu litters and I am not going to pretend otherwise or quietly delete them from the site. What I will say is which one I would start with if I were choosing today for an unfamiliar cat, and it is the unscented one — because the cost of being wrong about a scent is a cat that stops using its box, and that is a much more expensive mistake than a room that smells like nothing in particular.

Frequently asked

Is scented cat litter bad for cats?

Not automatically — plenty of cats use lightly scented litter without objection, and we make some. But fragrance is designed for the buyer, not the user, and a cat's nose is sharper than ours. For picky cats, cats that have stopped covering, or cats with airway sensitivity, unscented is the first change to make.

Do cats prefer unscented litter?

As a group, cats tend toward unscented, fine-textured, clean substrate. Individuals vary. Treat unscented as the safe default: it is the option least likely to be the reason a cat starts avoiding its box.

Does unscented litter smell worse?

It should not, if the litter does real odor work. Fragrance masks by adding a second smell; it does not remove ammonia. Strong clumping, baking soda, porous minerals and regular scooping do. A good unscented litter that is scooped often beats a scented one that is not.

Are litter deodorizer beads and powders safe?

They are masking in its purest form — fragrance released directly into the material your cat digs through. If you chose an unscented litter for a sensitive cat, adding scented beads undoes the decision. Scoop more often and use an open box instead.

My cat stopped using the box after I switched. Is the scent to blame?

Possibly, but rule out medical causes first — sudden avoidance can signal urinary problems, which are urgent in male cats. Once your vet has cleared your cat, switch back to the previous litter. Going back to what worked is faster than arguing with a cat's preferences.

By Jing Xue, founder of Noisy Lion, a Canadian brand developed in Toronto. This article covers substrate and odor preferences and is not veterinary advice. New or sudden litter box avoidance warrants a veterinary exam — consult your vet, and treat straining or an inability to urinate in a male cat as an emergency. Odor-control mechanisms described are general chemistry rather than brand performance claims. Pricing and specifications reflect August 2026 and may change.
