How to stop cat litter tracking everywhere: 9 fixes that actually work

You find it in your bed. In your socks. Somehow, in the bathroom sink. Litter tracking is the single most common daily complaint I hear from Canadian cat parents — more than smell, more than dust. And most advice online treats the symptom (buy a mat!) without touching the cause.

Here are nine fixes, ranked roughly by how much litter they will actually keep off your floor. The last one is the only fix that works at the source — and yes, I sell it, so I saved it for last and made the case honestly.

The short answer

Tracking happens two ways: litter stuck to paws and fur, and litter kicked over the box wall. Mats and box walls catch what escapes; the only change that reduces what sticks in the first place is particle size and shape — fine grains lodge between toes, dense pellets do not.

The fixes

Nine fixes, ranked by impact

Switch to a pellet-shaped litter

The source fix. Fine clay, corn or crystal grains wedge between toe pads and ride out of the box on fur. Dense plant-fibre pellets are simply too big to lodge — cats kick, pellets fall back in. Households that switch from fine-grain to pellets usually notice the difference in the first week. Everything below helps; this one changes the physics.

Get a bigger box with higher walls

Most tracking-adjacent mess is actually kick-out. A box one-and-a-half times your cat’s length with 20+ cm walls (low entry cut on one side) contains digging enthusiasm. Our litter box size guide has the measurements.

Use a bigger, textured mat than you think you need

Mats work — when they are large enough that your cat takes two or three full steps on them. A doormat-sized honeycomb or ridged mat under and in front of the box catches paw-borne litter. The tiny 30 cm mats catch style points, not litter.

Right-size your litter depth

Overfilled boxes spill on every dig. Keep 5–7 cm — enough for clumps to form, not enough to surf out over the edge.

Scoop more often

Cats dig longer and harder in a dirty box, hunting for clean ground. Twice-daily scooping means shorter visits and less excavation.

Trim toe-tuft fur on long-haired cats

Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Persians: the fur between the toe pads is a litter taxi. A careful trim (or a groomer visit) removes the velcro. Never cut close to skin — just the overhanging tufts.

Put the box on hard flooring, not carpet

Carpet grips escaped litter and grinds it in; hard floors let a hand-vac or broom clear the zone in seconds. If carpet is unavoidable, put a chair mat under box + litter mat.

Consider a top-entry or high-sided box — with caveats

Top-entry boxes force a walk across a grated lid that knocks litter off paws. They work for agile adults; skip them for kittens, seniors or big cats who need easy entry — a box your cat avoids creates far worse problems than tracking.

Make peace with the last 5%

No honest brand promises zero. A 30-second hand-vac ritual at scoop time keeps the last few escapees from migrating. If someone promises you absolute zero tracking, check what else they promise.

Why pellets win

The shape of the problem

Fine-grain litter (clay / corn / crystal)

Small enough to lodge between toe pads and cling to fur — leaves the box on every exit.
Noisy Lion — dense plant-fibre pellets

Too large to wedge between toes; kicked pellets drop back in the box. Fine sand-like texture by design — and 99.9% dust-free, CTI lab-verified.

Our unscented Natural Cassava is the pick most customers land on for a fine, sand-like texture — hard, fast clumps and no added scent. The tofu tea lines behave the same way underfoot.

Straight talk

A mat and a better box will cut the mess meaningfully, and you should do those regardless of whose litter you buy. But if you are sweeping a halo off the floor every single morning, you have a particle-size problem, and no mat fixes physics. Pellets do.

Frequently asked

What kind of litter tracks the least?

Granule size is the main factor: large, dense pellets track less than fine-grain litter, regardless of brand. If tracking is your single biggest concern, a large-pellet litter will beat any fine litter — including ours.

What we optimise for instead is clumping and dust. Our tofu tea lines are 99.9% dust-free per independent CTI lab testing, and our unscented Cassava clumps rock-hard. Both have a fine, sand-like texture most cats prefer underfoot — the trade-off is that fine granules travel, which a large mat in front of the box handles.

Do litter mats actually work?

Yes, as a second line of defence — if they are big enough for two or three full steps and textured. They catch what escapes; they cannot reduce what sticks to paws in the first place.

Why does my cat kick litter everywhere?

Digging is instinct, and it gets more enthusiastic in a dirty or cramped box. Higher walls, more floor area and twice-daily scooping calm most excavators. If digging suddenly became frantic, mention it to your vet.

Do pellets feel okay on paws?

Most cats transition without fuss over 7–10 days of gradual mixing — see the 10-day switch method. Very texture-sensitive cats exist; that is what our money-back first 2-pack is for.
