The Scoop

What Is Tofu Cat Litter? A Complete Guide for Cat Owners

by XueJing on Mar 31, 2026
Noisy Lion green tea tofu cat litter — what is tofu cat litter

Tofu cat litter is a clumping cat litter made from soy fibre — the leftover pulp from tofu production — pressed into pellets with natural binders. It clumps on contact, is biodegradable, and weighs roughly one-third of clay. In independent CTI lab testing (report A2260218535101001E), Noisy Lion's tofu litter measured 99.9% dust-free, a 0.1% crush rate, and 99.1% odour suppression. In Canada it sells for $54.99 per 12 kg bag — $4.58 per kilogram.

That is the short answer. Below is what those numbers mean in practice, how tofu litter compares to clay and crystal, and how to switch a cat over without a litter-box strike.

By Jing Xue, founder of Noisy Lion. Canadian brand, developed in Mississauga, Ontario. Independent CTI lab report on file. 400+ Canadian households. Last updated 29 July 2026.

What is tofu cat litter made of?

The base is food-grade soy fibre — the fibrous residue left after tofu is manufactured. It is cleaned, ground, and mixed with natural binding agents such as corn starch or guar gum so the pellets hold their shape. The mixture is extruded under pressure into uniform pellets and dried to a controlled moisture content. Some formulas, including ours, add activated charcoal or plant extracts for odour control.

Because the raw material is an agricultural byproduct rather than mined clay, the finished litter is biodegradable and about one-third the weight of a comparable clay litter — a real difference when you are carrying a bag up three flights of stairs.

Is tofu cat litter actually low-dust? Here are the lab numbers

"Low dust" is claimed by nearly every litter brand and almost never backed by a number. Noisy Lion's tofu litter was tested by CTI, an independent testing laboratory, under report number A2260218535101001E. Three results from that report:

  • 99.9% dust-free — the proportion of the product that is not airborne particulate
  • 0.1% crush rate — how much of the pellet breaks down under handling, which is what generates dust over time in the box
  • 99.1% odour suppression

Why this matters: dust is the single most common complaint about clay litter, and it is the reason cat owners with asthma or a cat with respiratory sensitivity go looking for an alternative in the first place. A crush rate figure is more useful than a dust figure alone, because a pellet that crumbles in the box keeps producing dust for the whole two weeks it sits there.

If dust is your primary concern, we have a longer piece on choosing litter for asthma and sensitive cats.

How much does tofu cat litter cost per kilogram in Canada?

Our current Canadian pricing, so you can compare against whatever is in your cart right now:

Product Price (CAD) Per kg
12 kg bag — Vanilla White Tea $54.99 $4.58
12 kg bag — Green Tea $54.99 $4.58
12 kg bag — Fig $61.99 $5.17
12 kg bag — Cassava (unscented) $64.99 $5.42

Budget clay litter in Canada typically lands between $1.50 and $2.50 per kilogram, so tofu litter does cost more per kilogram at the shelf. The honest comparison is cost per month rather than cost per bag, because clumping efficiency and how often you do a full box change both change the answer. We worked that math out, including competitor prices pulled from their own listings, in what cat litter actually costs per month in Canada.

How do you switch a cat to tofu litter?

Most cats adapt within one to two weeks. The reliable method is gradual:

  1. Days 1–5: 25% tofu litter, 75% current litter
  2. Days 6–10: 50 / 50
  3. Days 11–14: 75% tofu, 25% old litter
  4. Then switch fully

Pour 5–7 cm into a clean box, scoop clumps daily, and do a full change every one to two weeks depending on how many cats use it. If your cat resists, slow the ratio down rather than pushing through — litter-box avoidance is much harder to reverse than it is to prevent. Full detail, including what to do if a cat refuses outright, is in our 10-day clay-to-tofu switching guide.

Tofu vs clay vs crystal: the short version

Tofu Clay Crystal (silica)
Weight ~⅓ of clay Heaviest Light
Clumping Clumps on contact Clumps Mostly non-clumping
Biodegradable Yes No No
Flushable Often, system permitting No No
Price per kg (CA) $4.58 and up $1.50–$2.50 Varies widely

We have written each of these comparisons out properly rather than repeating them here: tofu vs clay and tofu vs crystal.

Is tofu litter flushable and biodegradable?

Biodegradable: yes, it breaks down naturally rather than persisting in landfill the way clay does. Flushable: often, but not universally — it depends on your plumbing and whether you are on septic. Flush clumps only, a small amount at a time, and check your system's guidance first. If you are unsure, bin it or compost it. We covered the septic question and the cases where you should not flush in is tofu cat litter actually flushable in Canada, and the wider environmental comparison in our eco-friendly cat litter guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is tofu cat litter safe for kittens?

Yes. It is non-toxic and low-dust, which matters for kittens whose respiratory systems are still developing. Kittens often mouth the pellets while exploring; ingesting a small amount is not a health risk. Supervise as you would with any new litter.

Does tofu litter track more than clay?

Tracking is comparable — pellet size is similar to a quality clay litter. Tracking is driven more by the cat and the box setup than by the litter type. A mat at the box entrance is the single most effective fix.

How long does a 12 kg bag last?

For one cat, roughly six to eight weeks with daily scooping and a full change every two weeks. Two cats roughly halves that. Box size and how deep you fill it change the answer more than most people expect.

Why is tofu litter more expensive per kilogram than clay?

The raw material is processed food-grade soy fibre rather than mined clay, and it is extruded and dried rather than simply crushed and bagged. Whether that premium is worth it depends on how much you value dust reduction, weight, and biodegradability — cost per month narrows the gap considerably compared with cost per bag.

Where to buy tofu cat litter in Canada

Noisy Lion tofu cat litter is available across Canada at major retailers including Amazon Canada, Walmart Canada, and Chewy Canada. You can also buy directly from noisylion.ca for home delivery. Buying direct gets you the current pricing in the table above; a subscription lowers the per-kilogram cost further and means you are not scrambling when the box runs low.
